Locks on older homes: start with the door you have
All advice guidesKeeping changes proportionate
For a like-for-like mortice replacement, I look for an appropriate matching lock. Some jobs can use an existing fitting without substantial alteration; others need additional work. I explain that before you agree to it.
Like-for-like BS3621 mortice replacements start at £65, including the lock and fitting. That isn’t a promise that every old lock or door can be dealt with at the starting price. Read about lock requirements and identification.
A stable door or several locking points
Explain which part of the door is failing and how its sections are used. A problem with one section doesn’t describe the whole locking arrangement. The fitting needs inspection; I don’t quote a standard “stable-door lock” price without knowing what’s there.
For listed buildings or alterations where consent may be relevant, check the requirements before changing historic fabric. I don’t provide conservation or planning approval.
Age isn’t the diagnosis
A stiff key can involve the key, internal wear, moisture or door alignment. On a Forsbrook repair, corrosion was involved and I was able to save the lock. That does not mean every older lock can be restored or every fault is water damage.
Arrange a look at the problem
Tell me if the door is currently open, locked or unable to secure. I’ll discuss the work and agree the price before starting. I cover the Moorlands and Stoke from Forsbrook, with no call-out fee or out-of-hours increase.
