What I check
Whether the key turns properly, how it feels in the lock, and whether the handle is free. Often the mechanism inside the door has failed: over time rainwater gets in, the gears go sticky and the locking points won’t release.

I get the door open first, then replace the part that has failed. If it’s the whole multipoint strip, I fit a new mechanism to match the door. If only the gearbox has gone, I replace just that.

When a uPVC door won’t lock or won’t open
