Home/Insurance lock checks
Checking your locks against your insurance requirements
The right starting point is your insurance policy’s wording. There isn’t one lock that I can promise will satisfy every insurer or every door.

BS3621 mortice, like for likeFrom £65
The lock and fitting. Other work is assessed separately.
No call-out fee. Same price day or night. Cost agreed before I start.
I can help identify what is fitted, compare it with the requirement you’ve been given and discuss any work needed. An insurance lock check is quoted for the job before I start.
You may already have a suitable lock
I’ve had customers ask for a replacement when their existing lock met the requirement they showed me. I explain what I find rather than recommend a new lock simply because someone has asked for one.
Identification can involve inspecting markings and product details. The way a lock operates is useful information, but it is not, by itself, proof of a particular certification. Your insurer can clarify ambiguous policy wording or confirm what it will accept.
BS3621 and cylinder ratings
BS3621 and ratings on security cylinders or handles describe different things. They are not interchangeable labels for a whole door. The specification needs to match the particular lock, door and requirement.
I fit like-for-like BS3621 mortice replacements from £65, including the lock and fitting. If different fitting work is needed, I’ll assess and explain the price. For suitable uPVC doors, cylinder upgrades may be the relevant conversation instead.

BS3621 mortice lock fitted in Newcastle-under-Lyme
A real job from my records, start to finish. No names or addresses; the price is what the customer paid.
- 1
What was wanted
After checking the lock requirements in their home insurance policy, the homeowner wanted a replacement mortice lock for a wooden door.
- 2
What I found
The existing fitting and the door were in good condition, so a BS3621 mortice lock could go in like for like, without replacing the door or major alterations.
- 3
What I did
I supplied and fitted the lock, then checked it with the door open and closed.
- 4
The result
A working lock to the specified standard, and the homeowner knew exactly which product had been fitted.

Read your policy’s exact wording first. A lock standard on its own doesn’t mean every requirement in your policy is met.
Questions about insurance lock checks
Short answers here. Ring if yours isn’t covered.
What should I have ready?
Have the relevant policy wording or the insurer’s written request available. Tell me which door it concerns and whether the lock is working. If you can’t identify the lock, that’s fine; you don’t need to remove it yourself.
Does a new lock guarantee insurance cover?
No. Cover depends on the policy and its conditions, not just a product description. I can explain the work and fitted product, but I don’t make coverage decisions for your insurer.
There’s no call-out fee. The check or repair is priced according to the work, agreed before I start, and prices don’t increase out of hours. Fitting work has a 12-month parts-and-labour guarantee.
