Types of door locks: which part are we talking about?

This is the part the key goes into. A euro cylinder is used with many uPVC door systems. Changing it can give you a new set of keys without replacing the whole multipoint mechanism, provided the rest is working properly.

Standard ERA euro-cylinder changes are usually £80–£110 under the straightforward-job conditions shown on that page. Security upgrades depend on the door and the particular cylinder.

The gearbox is the central operating part behind the handle. The full multipoint mechanism includes the long strip and locking points along the door edge. Either may need attention, but a handle symptom alone doesn’t tell you which.

Gearboxes are usually £150–£180 supplied and fitted; full mechanisms £180–£250. Opening a door initially stuck shut is included in those replacement jobs.

A mortice lock is fitted into the door rather than being a name for every keyed lock. When replacing one, the size, operation and specification matter. If you have an insurance requirement, bring the wording rather than assume a label alone settles it.
