Does the whole mechanism need replacing?
The barrel, or cylinder, is where the key goes. The gearbox sits behind the handle and operates the locking mechanism. The full multipoint mechanism includes the long strip along the edge of the door and its locking points.
A loose handle or a key that won’t turn does not identify the failed part on its own. It could be a connection, spring, gearbox or alignment problem. I check the door before recommending what to replace.
Comparing the fitted jobs
- Door alignment: usually £45–£65, adjusting the hinges and keeps without replacement parts.
- Gearbox replacement: usually £150–£180, supplied and fitted for one door.
- Full multipoint mechanism: usually £180–£250, supplied and fitted.
Both replacement ranges include opening the door if it is initially stuck shut. The part needed and complexity of the job affect the agreed price. There is no extra night, weekend or bank-holiday rate, and no call-out fee.

What to tell me when you call
Start with whether the door opens. Then describe what happens when you turn the key or lift the handle. Has it become stiff gradually, or did something suddenly give way? Don’t force it to demonstrate the problem.

What was wrong
The door handle had become harder and harder to lift, and several locking points had stopped moving properly.

There was damage to the locking strip beyond the central gearbox. A gearbox-only repair would have left faults elsewhere in the mechanism.

I showed the customer why a complete replacement was needed before we agreed the work and the price. Then I supplied and fitted a compatible multipoint mechanism and checked the door alignment and frame keeps.

Can the mechanism be replaced without a new door?
The locking mechanism can be replaced separately. I need to inspect the fault and the door to advise on the right repair; I won’t promise that every damaged door can be saved from a phone description.
Is a floppy handle proof that the mechanism has failed?
No. The handle, spindle, springs or gearbox can be involved. Handle replacement has its own fitting requirements and price.
